    I rode a 73 TNT without brakes for 2 years in high school. If you know ahead of time and you aren't going over 40mph, you can manage it. But mostly you don't want to go over 25mph. You can use the tips of your boots to create drag to help slow you down. I have 3 MXZs and one needs brake work. The lever goes 3/4 of the way to the handlebars before it reacts but Its been fine to ride. I also have a 94 Mach 1 that has broken brakes... But its also not running so no danger there. lol

      If I had any vehicle that stopping relied on me driving a certain speed and knowing ahead of time when I had to stop, I would keep it parked

    • @IbocC64
      @IbocC64 2 місяці тому

      @@MyOldSled I 100% agree. Being able to manage it didn't mean it was safe or smart. These days I don't even trust the MXZ to have worn brakes. I didn't notice until this year how much worse it was than my other sleds so I already scheduled the service at the local dealer. These days I don't run anything that doesn't have every single feature operational, right down to handwarmers and new safety lanyards. But as a teenager I wasn't above riding a sled that was missing all gauges and its headlight. Eventually I got everything on those old sleds running too, including the brakes. That old TNT was never ridden more than a mile or so from home on more or less flat trails. But I don't recommend anyone try it, especially with a modern 500lb sled. Those old early 70s sleds were smaller and only weighed about 300lbs. They still had bogey wheels instead of a skid with sliders back then. Now that I think about it, those probably caused a lot of drag on their own as they were just as ancient as the sled was.

    Vacuum fuel pumps hate ingesting water. Its too viscous, they can't push it through in large amounts. Water separates from the gas in contaminated gas and the gas floats on top of the water as water has a higher density, therefore if you get too much water in will rise above your fuel intake line and you will literally get nothing but water and can contaminate your fuel pump and carbs forcing you to drain the tank and clean the carbs and fuel pump. There are other problems like corrosion and even hydro-lock that can occur when getting too much water in a cylinder and it becomes uncompressible. Then you need to pull the plugs and blow all the water out then change your fuel and clean the fuel system too. It can be a mess. Happened on my 1999 MXZ 600 twice!

    Great advice my sled thanks you! Mice, squirrels and bugs... they love a nice, warm, quiet summer sled hideout! So along with the steel wool in the end of the pipe I put few charcoal briquets in spots I've found nests, droppings, food caches etc. They work! Just don't forget about them when back on the trails as they leave a mean black dust! Store briquets in a metal can, cover, good to go for next storage time.

    Good video, David. I have a track stand like your second one from Princess Auto. It is stable, but sometimes I find it doesn't lift my sled up high enough, especially when the sled is on castors, so I end up propping it up by putting the legs on top of a couple 4x4's, to give it more height. I also appreciate the shield at the back for protection from flying debris or when I forget to remove my track castors and it goes flying out the back when I rev the sled. P.s. I've had my Princess Auto lift for years. The rubber is a problem but i had some windshield washer hose that has held up quite well. The biggest complaint is the amount of lift you get. It's not high enough to lift my wife's sled with the R-Motion suspension. I use a couple of 6x6's underneath the stand to get the track off the ground. Hello Mr. Clarke, my wife and I live in Florida and visited Alaska in March of ‘23 we loved it so much that we plan to move there hopefully by end of this year ‘24? We went on a Snowmobile tour and had a blast so I’ve been looking at sleds ever since… I’m 61 and a former Small Engine Mechanic however it’s obvious that I have never worked on sleds so your video is a very helpful buying guide that I will rewatch again many times. Thank you for your time in making this video. Frederick Tanner 👍😎👍

    I put thick rubber mats down near the entrance of my garage, I back the sled in and it protects the floor and the carbides. Sometimes they get dragged forward but I just put them back before I back in. This has saved the floor from any scratches, I am unstudded. The new ski's have retractable carbides I would buy those if I needed ski's.

      @@MyOldSled yes, we think of him everyday even though it has been almost six years. I enjoy your videos, comparisons of the old SkiDoo and the newer model. We have old SkiDoo sleds, pre-2000. I wasn't aware they used AC voltage for lighting and thought my VOM had either failed or the rectifier circuit had shorted out.

    Reading AC current on my old Skidoo kind of threw me as I expected to see DC current going to the headlight. So no rectifier circuit on 1997 Skidoo.

      Correct i installed a rectifier in my 97 to power an accessory outlet. You could also probably install a regulator regulator from a sled with estart

      @@MyOldSled yes...I could see that could be easily accomplished in order to get some DC voltage if necessary. My AC voltage level was OK...but I have burnt out headlight and tail light. So something caused that.

    I have power to my winch, I can hear it running when the out and in switch are used but the drum isn't turning and I can engage the free spool but I cant pull out any cable...Does anyone have any ideas before I pull it apart..I bought it used and didn't use it for a few months but it was working when plowing for the last few snowfalls..
